Surin Islands

Located in the Andaman Sea, 100 kilometres to the north of the Similan islands, the Surin archipelago consists of five wonderfully tranquil islands covering 33,750 acres. It is one of Thailand's most breathtaking destinations, renowned for snorkelling and featuring some of Thailand's most beautiful beaches. The underwater scenery is equivalent to that of the Similan islands, showcasing some 200 coral species.  The coral colonies encircling the islands are the best developed in Thailand. Some of the reefs surrounding the five islands slope relatively gently to the seabed, and are at shallow depths, thus providing excellent snorkelling. There are plenty of opportunities to see marine life, including turtles. The park has Thailand's first underwater nature trail, established to offer an insight into marine ecosystems.

The two largest islands, Kok Surin Nua (north island) and Kok Surin Tai (south island), lie across a small bay from each other. Some of the best diving to be had in this area is in the channel between these two islands. Ko Chi, Ko Pachumba and Ko Torinla are the other three islands in the archipelago.

Kok Surin Tai is also home to the sea gypsies of the Morgan tribe, who have for many generations made their living from the sea and preserved their primitive way of life. A visit to the sea gypsy village provides a genuine insight into an ancient lifestyle.

Note: The islands are open daily from mid-November to early May, subject to weather conditions.

Activities: Snorkelling, diving and swimming.

How to get there: It is a 45-minute car drive from Le Meridien Khao Lak to the pier of Kuraburi Town near Ranong and a one-hour boat transfer to the island. Trips can be arranged at the hotel's tour desk.
